BACKINGS
Backing materials provide the base or "carrier"
for the abrasive mineral. Weights, thickness and types of
materials are selected to provide optimum flexibility,
rigidity or toughness, as required.
Backings are generally paper, cloth, fiber, and paper
cloth combination.
Paper backings are industrial quality papers manufactured
with selected pulp to develop high tension and bursting
strength and flexibility.
Cloth backings may be cotton, polyester or a combination
of both. Cotton is lightweigth and flexible; polyester
backings are stronger than cotton. In addition, they are
waterproof, fray resistant and they absorb shock.

| Glue |
More
flexibility, low resistance to heat and moisture. |
| Phenol

Water,
heat and mineral particles detachment resistance. |
| Urea
resin |
Better
flexibility than phenol resin. |
| Epoxy
resin |
Offers
more advantages in flexibility. |
ADHESIVE BONDS
Adhesives and resins that anchor the grain to the backing are
applied in two layers: a make coat and size coat.
Depending on the performance required, adhesives can be
formulated to deliver flexibility, strength or rigidity as
required for the finished product.
